Hardship Awards Requests
The LENS Foundation provides financial assistance for hardship requests from our Isle of Palms City First Responders and community members in times of special need.
What defines a financial hardship? Generally, it’s the inability to meet essential living expenses for basic goods and services. Hardship, as defined by the dictionary, is “severe suffering or privation.” At LENS, we consider a blend of these definitions to prioritize funds for those in the greatest need.
Before applying, financial advisors recommend exploring other options to help alleviate strain:
-
Evaluate essential expenses (rent/mortgage, utilities, food, debt payments) for possible savings.
-
Consider reducing car expenses by selling a vehicle for a more affordable option if payments are a burden.
-
Reach out to landlords or lenders to discuss payment relief, grace periods, or alternative payment options.
-
Explore housing alternatives in your area, or discuss potential options with your current landlord.
-
Consider shared housing options, such as roommates, to reduce costs.
-
Reach out to family and friends for temporary financial support.
-
Consult healthcare providers about reduced payment plans if costs are health-related.
-
Sell non-essential assets to free up cash.
-
Explore local support programs on SC211.org or other assistance networks.
-
Review loan options that may be available against retirement accounts.
We aim to have funds readily available to assist the community during critical times, allowing us to respond effectively when most needed or as a last resort. Applicants should review these steps as part of the application process, as they may impact eligibility.
For hardship requests over $2,000, applicants are asked to provide accurate details and complete ALL FIELDS on the application form to the best of your knowledge. Under some circumstances, supporting documentation may be required. All hardship requests are handled with strict confidentiality.
To support long-term financial stability for our community, the LENS Foundation also offers access to Personal Financial Coaches (PFCs) for those who request one. A PFC provides tailored guidance, helping individuals assess finances, set achievable goals, and create workable budgets. They assist with debt management, savings plans, and future financial preparedness. With regular check-ins, PFCs help clients stay on track, adjust plans as needed, and develop financial independence. If you are interested in connecting with a coach, please contact Ted Kinghorn at kinghorn.ted@gmail.com.
