LENS Foundation Launches Affordable Housing Initiative for Isle of Palms First Responders

ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. September 28, 2026 — 

The Law Enforcement Neighborhood Support Foundation (LENS IOP) has launched a new Affordable Housing Program for First Responders, providing practical housing support to members of the public safety community at several stages of their housing journey.

IOP Mayor Phillip Pounds said: This is another great benefit LENS is bringing to our staff to fill a need and more importantly provide another tool for personnel retention and recruitment for these critical roles.  I believe this program is unique to other towns and we are so fortunate to have it.”

The three-part program was developed in partnership with trusted service providers to address immediate temporary housing needs, provide greater flexibility for rent payments, and help first responders and their families pursue the long-term goal of homeownership.

Stop-Gap Housing 

Stop-Gap Housing provides temporary, transitional housing for first responders with an immediate short-term need. For stays of fewer than two weeks, LENS IOP works with the South Carolina Lutheran Retreat Center (SCLRC) on Palm Boulevard in Isle of Palms to determine availability and coordinate reservations. Lori Bode, Executive Director SCLRC comments “First Responders give so much to our communities, often being there for others in moments when they are needed most.  Our retreat centers exist to provide places of welcome, rest and renewal and this partnership with LENS IOP gives us an opportunity to extend that mission in a very practical way. We are honored to make the Coastal Retreat Center available as temporary housing for first responders and to play a small part in supporting those who serve the Isle of Palms community everyday”..

Flexible Rent Support 

Flexible Rent Support helps individuals manage monthly cash-flow challenges. Through Flexible Finance Inc. (Flex), participants receive information and guidance to explore flexible rent arrangements, including the option of dividing monthly rent into two or more manageable payments that better fit their budgets. “At Flex, we believe that people who protect our communities should not have to sweat their rent.  By letting fire fighters and police officers split their monthly payments into smaller, more manageable installments, we help first responders keep more breathing room in their budgets …and one less thing to worry about after a long shift.  We are proud to support the LENS affordable housing program and the families it serves.  David Sullivan, VP of Partnerships

Pathway to Homeownership

Pathway to Homeownership provides first-time prospective homeowners with consultation, evaluation, financial education, and a recommended path toward homeownership. In partnership with LENS IOP, Huntington Bank Branch Manager Kate Polcha and her staff provide guidance through established modules covering key financial topics. Potential grant and funding opportunities are also identified to help make homeownership more attainable.

Together, these initiatives are designed to provide meaningful housing support from an immediate need for a place to live, to greater financial flexibility while renting, to a sustainable pathway toward owning a home.
