On Sunday, November 23, the Isle of Palms Law Enforcement Neighborhood Support (LENS) Foundation delivered a little extra warmth to the island’s first responders — freshly baked holiday loaves from local favorite The Blue Root. The gesture, held at the Public Safety Building, offered each police, fire, and EMS family a selection of chocolate, zucchini, pumpkin, or orange-cranberry bread, all baked by owner Melissa Davis.
For Melissa, who lives on Isle of Palms with her husband, Ty, their two children, and two fluffy pups, the project held personal meaning. She has built The Blue Root around her love for cooking, gifting, and honoring her grandmother’s treasured zucchini bread recipe. “It’s through The Blue Root that I get to share a little bit of joy with the community I love,” Davis said. Her generosity added a sweet touch to a season centered on gratitude.
For the LENS Foundation, the delivery is one more way to support the men and women who protect the island every day. Founded in 2022, LENS provides direct assistance to Isle of Palms police officers, firefighters, and their families. The nonprofit funds hardship awards, education scholarships for children and spouses, specialized training, new equipment, family-friendly events, and wellness initiatives. LENS also places a strong emphasis on small acts of appreciation throughout the year — moments designed to let first responders know their community stands behind them.
“Gestures like this are meaningful because they remind our first responders that they’re valued not just for their service, but as people and families in this community,” said Ted Kinghorn, IOP LENS director. “Thanks to our donors, we’re able to continue offering both practical support and heartfelt appreciation.”
The foundation relies entirely on community generosity to sustain its mission, and supporters often say that the impact is easy to see — from the improved safety resources that protect the island to the simple, heartfelt moments like sharing homemade bread on a Sunday afternoon.
This season’s delivery comes at a timely moment, with Giving Tuesday approaching on December 2, 2025. As neighbors across the Lowcountry reflect on gratitude and generosity, the LENS Foundation hopes residents will consider supporting the mission that gives back to those who give their all. Community contributions — large or small — help ensure that first responders receive both the resources they need and the appreciation they deserve.
